Buying new Drums, Opinions Welcome!

if you want some attack you can pretty much rule out most Yamaha's and Sonor's. They're not as heavy in that dept. as any of the other brands mentioned IMO. (which is why I prefer them)

Gretsch it out of your price range.

So... I guess that leaves:

used DW or Pearl Masters series

Custom shop drums like Spaun. (which haven't done much for me)

You're a Virgil fan so you've heard those plenty. Pearl BRX are the nicest sounding Pearls to me (with the obvious exception of Masterworks of course) so I guess that or DW if you like them would be my recommendation.

www.roligarciajr.com used to stock a lot of Pearl BRX kits in great sizes. He still has some left and I'm fairly certain they're around 1700 for a 7 piece so I'd check him out. I think he's dropping Pearl but still has some kits in good colors and sizes. FWIW I normally hate the sound of Pearl's but I played a BRX recently and was seriously blown away. (I own Gretsch and Yamaha Maple custom for reference)

Thanks a million guys good solid points made and I sure wish a had that million right now it would make it easier [img]biggrin.gif[/img] but I probaly will look at the Pearl's more closely, and of course it is what sounds good to me in the long run. I tried out some sonor's years ago and I liked them quite abit they(the sonor's) sounded a tad punchier than the Yamaha's back then. It has been awhile since then that is why I enquired about the sonor hardware being bulky at this time. Will take a look at the Tama's also Bozzio.

Derek thank's for the link to the Pearl's, the BRX are looking pretty good for the money, and I do like Virgil's sound with the Pearl's compared to his older Premier's even though I heard the newer Premiers are much better than the older model's. Your right Gretsch are out of my price range [img]eek.gif[/img] and I am not a huge fan of DW's sound even though the craftsmanship is very good.

By the way do any of you guys feel that Maple shells being played with light to moderate force have a warmer sound than birch played with the same force? Just curious.

Appreciate your guys well thought out opinion's.

I think the Pearl Birch just sound more balanced than the Maple, at least to me. Just best combo of attack and sustain of the Pearl Masters line.

Finishes and quality are really impressive too.

I actually don't like the thin maple series at ALL for some reason. I've yet to hear a set of those I thought sounded even decent.

Actually my wife found this picture awhile back and said well there you go honey, that is what we can afford [img]eek.gif[/img] tough luck, that is the way it goes! Goofing aside what is up with the bathing suit, I guess really do not want to know. I hope I can afford a set that is a least a tad better than those! Thanks for the picture Pocket, makes me appreciate what I have right now.
